Whether the loss of a loved one was expected or sudden, it can feel overwhelming to talk to a child about grief. In this brochure, we share suggestions for talking with a child about loss, listening to their feelings, and looking ahead to what comes next. Remember that your love and presence is the best thing to help them through this time.

Here are some additional resources that may support you through this time.

Local Supports: Look for support services in your community that can help you and your child through the grieving and healing process. Your local hospice agency, hospitals, and funeral homes should be able to direct you to local organizations that may have grief support groups or other services.

Crisis Text Line: This is a free, 24/7 support for those in any type of crisis. Text HOME to 741741 to text with a trained Crisis Counselor, who will invite you to share and will empathize, listen, and help you feel calm and safe.

Professional Counselor: If you feel speaking with a professional may help, you can use these sites to find a counselor in your area.
