Parents’ Action for Children
Description
From the website: Parents’ Action for Children was founded in 1997 by actor/director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele as the I Am Your Child Foundation (IAYC). In our early years, we focused on raising national awareness about the importance of early childhood development and school readiness. Over the years, IAYC worked with the White House, Congress, the National Governors Association and numerous state and local officials to promote policies and programs that foster healthy early childhood development and to support state and local early childhood initiatives. The successes and challenges of I Am Your Child, however, taught us a valuable lesson: raising awareness was important, but we could only create real change in America if our nation’s 65 million parents realized their collective and untapped power. In 2004, we changed our name to Parents’ Action for Children to reflect our expanded mission of harnessing the power of parents to stand up on issues that impact families and children. As busy parents ourselves, we knew that organizing other parents would not be easy. But the growing use of the Internet provides a unique opportunity to both reach parents as well as communicate our views in policy debates. Although every parent has a unique social, political and economic perspective, we feel there is more that unites than divides us. We have laid out a comprehensive, bipartisan set of issues that are important to most American families, including the need for children’s health insurance, and shared concerns about such issues as negative and violent messages in the media, childhood obesity, declining real incomes, and shrinking time for family life. Together, we are working to advance this pro-family agenda and create a nation that truly puts parents and children first. In a short time, we have successfully built a membership of over 35,000 parents, larger than many other child and family organizations in Washington DC. Through partners who use our technology, support, and web content on a weekly basis, our organizational reach exceeds 50,000 parents. Our website, with more than 100,000 visitors a month, and our weekly online newsletter (or ezine) continue to bring new members to our organization every day. These parents are ready to demand change and act on behalf of their children. For media information, select “Issues” and then choose “Media and Culture” from the drop down menu.
